Fruits and nuts have been around since the beginning of time. But now they are getting their just desserts as a “new” source of health benefits. So, why now?
As we age, we are (finally) paying attention to what we eat and how we live. It’s created a huge demand for healthy snacks. We want better nutrition, lower fat, and to avoid the artificial additives that are common to so many processed foods.
In the past “healthy food” has equaled “bad taste”. But now, more and more things that are good for us taste good too. And, they are as easy to access as a bag of chips.
Start by getting some bags of dried fruits and nuts for your counter top. Many bags are re-sealable and stand up so they won’t spill out, and they stay fresh. Then you can easily add some cranberries to your favourite cookie recipe or walnuts to your ice cream. You’ll be getting more antioxidants, fiber, omega-3, vitamins, minerals, and good fat without giving up your treats.
THE SNACK FACTOR: Toasted or raw nuts are more than just a handy, healthy snack to have around. Unlike some snacks, a handful of nuts goes a long way toward satisfying the urge to nibble. Mix them with other ingredients, such as raisins, cranberries, dried fruit bits, granola, or seeds to make your own trail mix. Store in a air tight container in your desk drawer or on the counter for a quick energy boost. Check out Recipes for more ideas.
